Landscape maintenance training and certification programs offered
The Hawaii Island Landscape Association and University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension are offering the 2019 Landscape Maintenance Training program, the Irrigation School, and the Landscape Industry Certification Testing program to landscape professionals, home gardeners, and property managers.
The Landscape Maintenance Training is a 10-week series of classes that may also be taken individually. Topics include: basic botany, tropical plant identification, soil health, irrigation basics, pesticide use and more. Classes begin April 5 and run Friday afternoons until May 10, then move to Thursdays – May 16 through June 6, 1:30-4:15 p.m. at the Hawaii Community College – Palamanui campus from 1:30 pm to 4:15 pm.
Cost per individual class is $40 for association members ($45 non-members); fee for the entire series is $400 for members ($450 non-members) and includes a copy of the Landscape Training Manual for Maintenance Technicians.
The annual two-day Irrigation School will be conducted May 31 to June 1 and prepares candidates for the irrigation certification test. Fee $300 ($350 non-members).
Landscape Industry Certified Technician is a professional credential landscapers can earn through the national testing program. The Kona test, held in June, will offer certification testing for Ornamental Maintenance, Softscape Installation, and Irrigation. Additional costs apply for the certification tests.

Hawaii Island AJA Veterans Legacy Association scholarships
The Hawaii Island AJA Veterans Legacy Association is offering up to two $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors continuing their post-high-school education this fall.
Applicants must be a senior at any Hawaii island public or private high school enrolling full time at any accredited college or university in the state of Hawaii for the 2019-2020 academic year and registering for 12 credits or more. (Online educational programs ineligible.) In addition, an essay of no more than 1,000 words is required describing the significance and role of Americans of Japanese ancestry in the 100th Infantry Battalion, Military Intelligence Service or the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in World War II (focusing on a minimum of one) and their legacy.
Application forms and instructions are available at the counselor offices at Hawaii island public and private high schools. Deadline is April 20; applications, including the essay, must be postmarked by this date.
